Chapter Ten

Ebon glanced up from his laptop just long enough to ascertain the tall figure hovering in his doorway was his older brother. “Yes?”

“Are you planning on leaving the building anytime soon or shall I tell Magda to clean around you?” Oren asked.

Ebon glanced at the time and swore under his breath. He’d sent Sophie a text to say he was leaving, then got distracted. That was forty minutes ago. She’d be at his flat by now, waiting.

Hopefully naked.

“Five minutes. I just have to finish a couple of things before I meet that source tomorrow.”

“Suit yourself. Grace is on night shifts this week so I’m off home to catch her before she leaves. Sophie’s ’round yours again, I assume?”

Now Oren had his full attention. “How did you know that?”

“Safe guess. The sudden radio silence on the Sophie issue suggested the two of you probably worked something out. Has she given you anything on the story?”

Ebon shook his head. “No, and I doubt she will. That was a stupid idea. The current arrangement is purely physical.” He carefully omitted their flirtation with the idea of working together, grateful they’d come to an unspoken agreement to set that plan aside.

“Good for you. Though prepare yourself, because these situations rarely stay ‘purely physical’ for long.”

“Not this one. We’re both totally clear on that point. We’re better as friends, and always will be. Either way, Sophie’s as anti-commitment as they come and I’ve got this mammoth paper to run, especially since the editor-in-chief has taken to leaving early to shag his fiancée.”

“Which reminds me.” Oren glanced at the time on his phone. “I’d better be off. Don’t keep Miss Caplan waiting—especially since you’re about to scoop her when you meet that source tomorrow.”

Ebon grunted a goodbye as his brother left, not relishing the upper hand he’d gained when a breakthrough in the story had fallen into his lap that morning. The call came in cold through the switchboard—a former executive assistant to a minister who’d pointedly informed him her story would be of interest, then gave details on where she wanted to meet tomorrow. The same minister was on his list of those suspected to be employing trafficked women, but there hadn’t been enough evidence to make a strong link—until now.

He could only assume his public profile with the Phoenix is what prompted this woman to get in touch, which made him feel guilty about nabbing this lead ahead of Sophie—but not guilty enough to tell her.

Sophie. He picked up his phone and dashed off a quick text to let her know he’d been held up but was on his way. Now he had to actually leave. He turned back to his inbox, closed the prep document he’d have to finish tomorrow morning, picked the most urgent e-mail, and hastily typed a reply.

He heard footsteps outside his office and the slow creak of the door being pushed farther open.

“I strongly suggest you stop bothering me and go home to fuck your fiancée before she—”
